April is crunch time for the World Snooker Tour as it signals the return the Halo World Championship. Starting on April 18th, the world’s top 16 players, joined by 16 qualifiers, will all battle on the baize to get their hands on the historic Silver Lady trophy. The most prestigious of the three “Triple Crown” tournaments, the World Championship is the truest test of every aspect of the game. Players such as Stephen Hendry, Ronnie O’Sullivan and even more recently the likes of Mark Selby have dominated this tournament due to their almost inhuman ability to stay at the table, with an unwavering determination to win.
This season has been marked by the sheer variety of names winning events - From 22 events, there have been 16 unique winners. It is refreshing to see a season not be totally dominated by one player, and this tees up an exciting few weeks at the crucible where anyone can take the crown

Can Zhao Break The Crucible Curse?
Zhao Xintong lit up the Crucible Theatre en route to winning his first world championship title in 2025, seeing off Mark Williams in the final comfortably with a scoreline of 18-12. Zhao’s victory made history - he became China’s first world snooker champion, as well as the first to hail from Asia. Moreover, he became only the third player in the Crucible era to win as a qualifier.
As defending champion, Zhao will kick off the tournament playing in the very first morning session. Many snooker fans know that a curse follows him - the Crucible Curse outlines that no first-time champion has ever successfully defended their crown. Recent champions such as Kyren Wilson and Luca Brecel fell at the first hurdle, and even all-time greats such as Ronnie O’Sullivan and Stephen Hendry could not defeat the curse.
If anyone looks poised to break the curse, Zhao is a strong candidate. His play is composed and visually pleasing - a prolific break builder, Zhao’s pinpoint cue ball control and natural ability to pot balls makes him strong at turning any visit into a frame-winning opportunity. His win last year shows that he has the stamina required to survive this marathon of a tournament, however fans are eager to see whether Zhao’s temperament can better the pressure of the curse.
The Qualifiers

The seeds must first overcome 16 players from the World Championship Qualifiers at the English Institute for Sport before the Crucible. Here, 128 professionals and invited amateurs compete over four best-of-19 matches, with rankings determining entry points: players ranked 17-48 start in round 3, 49-80 in round 2, and those below in round 1. Excitement builds as players chase their Crucible spot, with Judgement Day (April 14th-15th) a key highlight as the final 32 contest round 4.
This stage is filled with quality, including former champions Luca Brecel and Stuart Bingham, and recent ranking event winners Jack Lisowski and Thepchaiya Un-Nooh. History has already been made, with polish talent Michal Szubarczyk becoming the youngest World Championship match winner at just 15 years old!

Our very own sponsored player Stan Moody is also starting his World Championship campaign in the qualifiers. The 19-year-old has been enjoying the best season of his promising career so far, reaching 2 ranking event quarter finals with big wins over former world champion Kyren Wilson, and former world finalists Barry Hawkins, Ali Carter, and Ding Junhui. Most notably, Stan held his nerve to fight off a comeback from all-time great John Higgins and beat him 5-4 in the 2026 World Open, reflective of his talent and drive. His consistency this season means he starts the World Championship qualifiers in round 3 with his world ranking of 44th, meaning he is only 2 matches away from achieving his crucible dream. Everyone here at Cue + Case wishes him the best of luck, and we hope to see him become the next Crucible debutant!
Qualifiers have made deep runs before - Alex Higgins (1972), Terry Griffiths (1979), Shaun Murphy (2005), and Zhao Xintong (2025) all went on to win the tournament from this position - showing that whoever qualifies in 2026 could pose as potential banana peels for the top 16 seeds.

Ones To Watch
Judd Trump enters the tournament as world number one. He has evolved from a more one-dimensional attacking force into a hardened match player who can excel in all areas of the game. His 2026 season has been defined by consistency, appearing in multiple ranking semi-finals and finals. More importantly, he has developed a knack for winning even when not at his strongest which could prove crucial across the long matches of this tournament.
Mark Selby will also be tough to beat. A four-time world champion with 10 Triple Crown titles, his style is meticulous, calculated and patient. He has the uncanny ability to win scrappy frames through excellent tactical play and then capitalise on mistakes, making him a strong contender for this year’s Championship.
Ronnie O’Sullivan’s quest to stand head and shoulders above the rest with a record-breaking eighth world title continues. He still has the skill, shown by his 2 ranking final appearances in the 25-26 season. However, his comprehensive 17-7 defeat to Zhao Xintong in last year’s semifinal have sparked questions as to whether he can keep up with the newer generation of players. If there is any player you cannot write off though, without doubt it is Ronnie O’Sullivan.
Wu Yize is an exciting dark horse. The 22-year-old captured his first ranking title and reached the semi-finals of the Masters this season. His snooker is flashy and quick scoring, with a composed demeanor beyond his years. We are yet to see this tested, as he has yet to advance past the first round at the Crucible, however we can expect to see some fast-paced exciting snooker regardless

It's all to play for at this year's World Championship, and we cannot wait to witness the drama of the Crucible unfold! Will we have a new world champion? Or will a past champion return to claim the Crown?
