The Greatest of All Time
A name that needs no introduction in the world of snooker is The Rocket himself – Ronnie O’Sullivan. Hailed as the greatest player ever to pick up a cue, he has achieved almost everything there is to achieve in the sport. With 23 Triple Crown titles – the most by any professional snooker player – his record is comparable to the Grand Slam hauls of Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic in tennis. But there’s something truly special about Ronnie: it’s not just that he’s a serial winner, it’s the way he plays to win.
A Style Like No Other
His cue ball is on a string. Once he strikes the cue ball, he waits where he wants it to stop for the next shot, and more often than not, it does. If that wasn’t enough, he also has an average shot time of close to 15 seconds of shot, always among the fastest of the players on tour. With this supreme cue ball control and unbelievable speed, he’s capable of reeling off frames in a matter of minutes, a skill that intimidates even the highest ranked players in the world. Having complied the most number of century breaks and the most number of maximum 147 breaks in snooker history, there’s simply no one the crowd loves to watch more than Ronnie O’Sullivan.

My Chance to Play The Rocket
I was a University student in Nottingham in 2016 when I stumbled upon a Facebook post saying that Ronnie was doing an exhibition night in Mansfield, not too far from me. Eight lucky fans who purchased tickets would get to play a frame each against the G.O.A.T himself. I was left short of breath. My hands dialled the number given as fast as I could, and the person on the other end told me there was just one ticket left. I put every penny I had in my student account towards it, and a few minutes later, the confirmation email landed in my inbox. A ticket to play a frame against Ronnie O’Sullivan.
A Night I’ll Never Forget
I had to pinch myself to believe it, but the days flew by, and before I knew it, the evening had arrived. I walked into The Towers in Mansfield with a fluttering heart and took my seat. Willie Thorne introduced the referee for the night, Michaela Tabb, and asked her who the best player she had ever refereed was. Unsurprisingly, she answered with the name of the man about to walk in. Then I saw him enter – carrying an aura, a glow, and the weight of every fan’s expectation. For a die-hard snooker fan like me, it was inexplicable. It was like seeing God himself.
Seven frames whizzed by in the blink of an eye, during which I witnessed three century breaks. And then, it was my turn to get on the table. My arms and legs felt like jelly as I summoned every ounce of energy to step up to centre stage. He approached me and said hello. I stumbled for words but somehow managed to tell him that this was a dream come true and that he had been my hero all my life. We shook hands. I broke off well, earning a tap on the table from my idol – my life felt complete in that moment.
He responded by potting a long red and building a 54 break from my decent first shot. I don’t know how I managed it, but with trembling arms, I potted three balls against him. As soon as he got his second chance, he cleared the table with a 65 break.
A Dream Fulfilled
It didn’t matter that I hadn’t played to my potential. I had lived out a fantasy that even the hardest-core snooker fans in the world could only dream of. I played a frame against my hero, and he acknowledged me. It was, and always will be, one of the most memorable days of my life.
